As reported, Wal-Mart is expanding its gun and ammunition offerings at hundreds of its stores.  This is a reversal of Wal-Mart’s recent trend of scaling back gun-related merchandise:

The latest news, according to The Wall Street Journal, is that Wal-Mart will reload gun sales by cutting back on electronics floor space to make room for rifles, shotguns and ammunition at hundreds of U.S. stores. . . Wal-Mart stopped selling guns and ammo at most of its U.S. stores five years ago but is now stocking up on firearms and nearly half of its 3,600 U.S. locations.

I haven’t noticed a difference at my local Wal-Mart in Davenport, IA, likely because it already had a decent selection of guns and ammunition.  Indeed, during the ammo shortage during the summer after President Obama’s election, Wal-Mart was one of the few places I was ever able to find .40 S&W full metal jacket ammo for target practice.

In any event, I am happy that Wal-Mart is expanding its gun-related merchandise.  For better or worse, Wal-Mart is the largest retailer in the USA.  In some areas, Wal-Mart is just about the only option for shopping.  In other areas, there are still many people who shop almost exclusively at Wal-Mart.  When it comes to gun rights, I’ve long believed that half of the battle is just getting those who don’t own gun to become comfortable at the sight of a gun, rather than reacting hysterically at the sight of something even remotely gun-related.  Hopefully, the visible guns and ammo in Wal-Mart’s many stores will help cure at least a few people of their irrational fear of guns.
