For far too long, people have put all of their digital eggs in the one basket that it big tech. Facebook and Twitter have gained tremendous control over our lives, and with that comes the ability to inflict significant harm. Regardless of your political views, that sort of centralization of control over communication by large tech companies should concern you.
Mastodon is the solution. It is a social network made of of federated servers run by thousands of individuals, built using open source software. I encourage everyone to make use of Mastodon. Towards that end, I even run one of the many Mastodon servers.
