In recent years, the Cook County, Illinois commissioners have ramped up their efforts to prevent law abiding citizens from possessing firearms.
These ordinances have ranged from the Cook County “Assault Weapons Ban” which prohibits a variety of handguns, shotguns, and rifles that hardly warrant the term “assault weapon”, to the currently pending ordinances that would close all the firearms dealers and shooting ranges in the county. Neither the author of this article nor any responsible firearms owner likes reading about shootings in the newspaper, however the cook county ordinances that are directed at law abiding citizens simply will not solve the problems of crime. It is clear that people who are willing to commit murder despite the strong laws against murder will not be deterred by the misdemeanor charge of possessing an “assault weapon” in cook county. The laws will, however, prevent law abiding citizens from from being able to enjoy the hobby of target practice, or defending their homes from criminals.
