Firearms information and politics, witih an emphasis on lawful self defense

New Gun Rights Law in Pennsylvania

As reported, Democratic Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell signed House Bill 1845 into law.  This pro gun bill includes the following components:

  1. An “emergency powers” reform that prevents the police from wrongly confiscating guns of law abiding citizens during a natural disaster, as happened in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.  In the wake of a natural disaster or other state of emergency, police are extremely busy, and criminals take advantage of this fact, which makes having a gun for self defense all the more important.
  2. Provisions to allow a person under immediate threat to bypass waiting periods and get a concealed carry permit right away.  Such provisions have the potential to save the lives of many people, including women threatened by abusive former partners.
  3. Provisions to allow concealed carry in state parks.  This will allow law abiding citizens in state parks the same self defense rights they currently enjoy while eating lunch, running errands, otherwise going about their peaceful business.

I'm looking for some concrete information on when you are allowed to use deadly force in your home in the state of PA. I've read conflicting information as two whether you need to flee if you can versus shooting an intruder.

You could ask your local gun shop owner if you are eligible to purchase a shotgun.
In some states, a DUI will cause a person to loose their CCW, but not their guns.
If you’re willing to shoot someone knocking at the door, then don’t worry about the penalty for shooting them.
If your neighborhood is as bad as you describe; can you move?
